I have avoided writing about this subject for quite sometime now…. probably because I have very strong opinions regarding this topic. There are many ideas out here in “internetlandia” about whether or not one “needs” formal aromatherapy education, and just how to go about acquiring that education. In this post I am speaking to those of you out there who have an interest in aromatherapy as a hobby, or as a potential career.
Some believe that reading information on the internet is the “be all and end all”, that everything you see is true, and that if you can find a few random YouTube videos, well……then you know all about aromatherapy. Some think reading a few books may suffice for an education, and others maintain that the pamphlet/guide they receive with their purchases from one MLM or another is all they need to get started as an aromatherapy “specialist”, and dare I say “aromatherapist”.
My intention is not to lecture on MLM’s and their “educating” capabilities. No, my intention here is to explain just why studying with reputable educators, who have been in the field for years, and uphold aromatherapy as both an art and SCIENCE, is critical in an age where everything and anything goes.
Truth be told, there is an extraordinary amount of information and research coming out weekly/monthly/yearly that involves the SCIENCE of aromatherapy. There are complex routes of absorption to understand, and safety considerations such as proper application and dilution. Yes, it IS important to know which essential oils may be contraindicated with certain medications or medical conditions, and just what is correct to use with infants, children, the elderly or the infirm. There is a lot of chemistry to understand, as well as biological processes, and frankly would you want to use essential oils to help support yourself or a family member without truly understanding just how, or why, you should be using them?
For me an educated consumer of essential oils should either (a) seek the assistance of an Aromatherapist who is Certified or (b) get a certification yourself. Either way, it will safeguard you and your loved ones from potential hazards, and inform you about appropriate support.
There are many wonderful educators both here in the USA and in Europe to study with. Organizations such as the Alliance for International Aromatherapists, National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, the International Federation of Aromatherapists, and the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists, can assist you in finding the Aromatherapy Certification Program that best suits your needs.
And talk about best serving needs, my mentor Andrea Butje of AromaHead Institute, has been in the “business” of educating aromatherapists since 1999. Andrea has written and developed original educational materials, including some great videos. She added AIA, and NAHA certification approved online classes in 2008, and as of late summer 2013 AromaHead Institute has made a HUGE decision to offer all its class exclusively online except for its Teacher Training Program. More information may be found at www.aromahead.com
I am proud to say I am an AromaHead Institute Scholars Program graduate, and now have added Certified Aromatherapist to my list of credentials. I am certified as a teacher of aromatherapy as well, and when I teach workshops in aromatherapy in NYC, or when clients come in to my office for aromatherapy consultations I am confident that my strong training, supported by my continuing education classes with such notable educators as Robert Tisserand, Rhiannon Harris, and Gabriel Mojay, continues in the “old school” tradition of mentor/apprentice, a tradition that I pay forward as well.
For information regarding workshops I teach see my webpage “Services” tab and look under “Aromatherapy Educational Workshops”, and check my FaceBook page, https://www.facebook.com/EssentialBodyWisdom.GinaFlores, for frequent updates.
