Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of immobility and pain due to trauma, posture or inflammation. Connective tissue called fascia surround the muscles, bones, nerves and organs of the body. Points of restriction in the fascia can place a great deal of pressure on nerves and muscles causing chronic pain. This alternative medicine therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles in order to balance tissue and muscle mechanics and improve joint range of motion in order to relieve pain.
This modality uses the inherent connection between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems as the basis of its technique, which includes deeper touch, static pressure on specific points to relieve pain, and manipulation of muscle, tendon and connective tissue. Injury, postural distortions, repetitive stress and trauma can cause the nerves to create an imbalance in their message transmissions sent to the tissue, which makes the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. This technique therefore helps break the cycle of pain.
